The potential correlation between drug use, impulsiveness, and emotional dysregulation among expatriates in the Netherlands
In her study „The Relationship Between Drug Use, Impulsiveness and Emotional Dysregulation. A Pilot Study among Expatriates Living in the Netherlands“, psychology major Reham Al Taher examines the validity of news reports as well as her own personal observations that an inordinate number of expats who have moved to the Netherlands have higher than average rates of deaths, overdoses and depression.
Helping Expat Communities
The author investigates if there is indeed a connection between drug use and the stressful living conditions individuals face when living abroad. It is a fact that anyone moving to a foreign country experiences high levels of stress trying to deal with the challenges of a foreign language and the possible culture shock. The question is: why do some choose to alleviate feelings of isolation, loneliness, and depression with drugs – while others are able to focus on long-term goals instead of seeking immediate gratification. The author draws from personal experience which only reinforces her desire to further examine these questions. In her publication „The Relationship Between Drug Use, Impulsiveness and Emotional Dysregulation“ she aims at finding a way to help the expatriates community in the Netherlands by developing strategies to provide services such as support groups or counseling. Her pilot study uses a correlational study design comparing an experimental group consisting of expats who have used drugs against a control group with expats who have not. The results presented in „The Relationship Between Drug Use, Impulsiveness and Emotional Dysregulation“ confirm the hypothesis that drug use and impulsiveness are positively linked among expatriates in the Netherlands.
The Author
Reham Al Taher was raised most of her life in Egypt and moved to the Netherlands in 2012. She is a psychology major and aspiring clinical psychologist with a deep passion for helping people in any way possible. Reham is inspired by the works of the Dalai Lama and Eckhart Tolle and bases a lot of her understanding of human beings on how they believe the world should be and how they should behave in order to live in that world. The author attempts to understand human beings‘ intentions depending on if they are following their ego, their pain or their heart. As she continues on her journey to gain more insight through experience, she hopes to end her journey with moving her practice to the Middle East and dedicating her work to promoting and educating the Arab world on mental health.
