Hsinchu, Taiwan Oct 9th, 2018 – Maisense, an innovative startup, devotes itself to stroke prevention. The company now introduces an AI-based solution that can screen stroke through early detection of atrial fibrillation (AFib) which will also be presented at MEDICA 2018 November 12-15 in Düsseldorf, Germany at booth B26/Hall 11 and is a finalist for the MEDICA App COMPETITION.

Every four minutes, someone dies of stroke. Stroke is also a leading cause of long-term disability. Stroke is even called the „silent killer“ because it often come without any warning signs. However, up to 80% of stroke could be preventable by monitoring the major risk factors of stroke at an early stage.

13% of strokes are classified as hemorrhagic stroke. When the arteries of the brain weaken or break, allowing for blood to spread in the brain tissues, hemorrhagic strokes occur. They are most often caused by chronically hypertension. Up to 87% of strokes are classified as ischemic. An ischemic stroke occurs when a clot or a mass blocks a blood vessel, cutting off blood flow to a part of the brain. There are two main risk factors of ischemic strokes: arterial stiffness and atrial fibrillation (AFib).

A research, „Changes in arterial stiffness independently predict stroke in patients with essential hypertension,“ published in 2018 European Society of Cardiology (ESC), shows a demonstrated association and prediction between arterial stiffness and stroke for essential hypertension patients. The Framingham Heart Study (FHS) identified common factors and characteristics contributed to cardiovascular disease. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL), also called the „bad cholesterol“, is a notable enemy of arterial elasticity and fosters arterial stiffness. High LDL level raises the chances of a heart attack because it deposits in the walls of blood vessels that narrows the arteries or even clog. Other risk factors such as age, hypertension, smoking and diabetes are highly related to cardiovascular diseases.

It’s worth noting that patients with AFib have a five-fold increase in risk of stroke compared to those without. It affects 4.5 million people living in the European Union, and accounts for approximately one-third of hospitalizations for cardiac rhythm disturbances. The European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA), who published the aforementioned numbers, released a classification system of AFib-related symptoms in 2014. EHRA also stressed the fatal consequence even if AFib symptoms are not noticeable to patient or they may not feel uncomfortable. „Since an AFib episode can come and go, there may be many patients undetected and therefore they didn“t receive timely treatment. That“s why we take AFib screening seriously as a key measurement for stroke prevention,“ said Benjamin Chiu, CEO of Maisense.

AFib is usually diagnosed on an ECG but if a patient“s symptoms don“t occur while he sees his doctor or if they are back to normal at this point of time, the doctor would not be able to give advice properly. As a result, Maisense presented the Freescan device and the myFreescan App, which deliver an all-in-1 solution, utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) for early AFib detection, arrhythmia (bradycardia and tachycardia) detection, pulse wave velocity, and blood pressure monitoring in a single device. Users adopting Maisense’s solution can assess their risk level of strokes anytime.

From the patient“s perspective, the solution makes it very easy to measure and record all these biomedical signals at any time. Patients can monitor their own health conditions and take action at an early stage. Through the web-based Patient Care System, doctor can also be informed immediately when abnormal incidents occur – if a patient activated this function under doctor-patient privilege. It also provides sufficient data for doctors to make assessment quickly. The option does not only help to avoid unnecessary healthcare spending and time investments but also improves the service efficiency.

As Apple announced its Watch Series 4, which can record ECG and has received FDA approval, it is believed that more and more people are noticing the importance of irregular heart rhythm detection. Maisense is the world“s first company to provide an all-in-1 solution to screen the top 3 causes of stroke: arterial stiffness, hypertension, and atrial fibrillation in one single device. Maisense“s Freescan has received EU CE medical certification and is now available in Germany. Maisense will also present the solution at the upcoming „MEDICA 2018“ trade fair on November 12-15 in Düsseldorf, Germany, in Hall 11/ booth B26. Freescan has been selected as one of the 10 finalists in the MEDICA App COMPETITION ( The top ten solutions will be presented at the MEDICA Connected Healthcare Forum, Hall 15C24 on Nov. 14 from 3pm.
